The Mlyňany Arboretum was founded in 1892 by a passionate gardener,
dendrologist Dr. Štefan Ambrózy – Migazzi, who carried out the first plantings
on an area of 40 ha, on a morphologically uniquely divided piece of territory, v
undergrowth of an oak-hornbeam forest near Zlaté Moraviec. That’s how it came about
the first evergreen dendrological collection in Central Europe. Simultaneously with the first ones
he also started building a neoclassical manor house with plantings, which is a dominant feature
Mlyňany Arboretum. The mansion and the original Ambrozy Semper vireo park are
a national cultural monument.

In 1953, the Mlyňany Arboretum became part of the Slovak Academy of Sciences,
which created the conditions for the intensive development of scientific and research activities
and expansion of woody plant collections.

Today, the Mlyňany Arboretum with an area of 67 ha is the largest Slovak arboretum and
in addition to the original collection of evergreen trees, it also includes new ones
expositions of East Asian dendroflora, a part with North American flora
dendroflora, an exhibition of Slovak dendroflora and a rosary. Presentation
collection of trees, educational and popularization activities are other important
activities of the Mlyňany Arboretum, which is visited annually by around 40,000 visitors.
